Change is always difficult because it encompasses something new, something different and it is natural to be fearful of the unknown. The transition from Primary to High School can be scary and exciting all at the same time. During this time where things are unpredictable with Coronavirus and the education system, it is important make the transition as easy as possible. This post includes 7 tips that can help you transition from Primary to High School. One tip for each day of the week😉
1. Find an online summer school to attend
If your new school has a summer program, ensure that you attend. It's not a waste of time or money. Firstly, it helps with the simplest things that can cause the biggest problems. Though this may be online, you may get a virtual tour of the school so you can know the location of the bathroom, your classroom, the nurse, cafeteria etc. These are all essential. Summer school prepares your mind for actual school. It also allows you to learn the school rules, the teacher's names and interact with your potential classmates.
2. Get insider information
You will not be able to learn everything from summer school. There will always be something hidden that only a "real genna" from the institution can share with you. In other words, a student who has been through your grade level and can share life hacks with you. They may be able to tell you to ensure that your homework is always done in Mrs. X's class because she likes to punish or they may say don't ever put your head on the desk in Mr. Y's class because he will let you stand for the session. This type of information goes a long way in helping you stay afloat at your new school .
3. Be open to changes
High school is a whole different kettle of fish...I don't know why people say kettle of fish because no one puts fish in a kettle but anyway....you know what I mean. It's a whole different ballgame, or a whole different cup of tea. The point is, high school will be different from what you are accustomed to. The best advise is to be open to changes. Know beforehand that things will be different, the number of sessions per day will be different, the number of teachers that you have will be different, no break-time, the food, the number of trips to the bathroom etc. You will also be exposed to different subjects, that you never did in Primary school. Some of these may be English Literature, History, Geography, Library Studies, Information Technology among others.
4. Read ahead
As soon as you get your textbooks start reading. Yes, read away. You may not know what the teacher will start with but syllabi is available online for all subjects at each grade level. It would be good to check out the syllabus for your subject to get an idea of what the subject entails. Especially those new subjects that you never encountered in primary school, example my beloved subject Geography. Literature books are always a good way to start. See the benefits of reading ahead in the previous blog post 5-fun-things-to-help-you-prepare-for school.
5. Create a schedule to ensure proper time management.
So even though you haven't gotten your timetable yet, you can still sort out a schedule. Think of the distance from your home to your new school. Consider how long it will take you to get a taxi if you are taking public transportation. Factor in breakfast time, personal preparation time etc. This will help you determine what time you need to wake up for school and allow you to get everything done in time to allow you to reach school on time without being frazzled.
6. Think about the type of person you want to be
It's a new environment. Your past experiences from primary or prep school does not need to follow you to high school. Read about your personality and things you like. Regardless of who you are, you are amazing and there is someone who has similar interest as yourself. There is no need to change yourself to suit the masses...after all, you could just be a limited edition...special and unique .
Just be yourself. Try to learn enough about yourself to know who you are before you get to school. That will help you determine the clubs you want to join, the friends you choose and the kind of friends you attract. Want to learn how to attract the right friends? Comment below for an upcoming summer blog post on the topic .
7. Be a goal digger...
Yassss! You read it right. Be a goal digger. Make a list of all the things you want to accomplish and work for it. Hustle!
Write down the things that can help you achieve your goals and then work on each one. If you are not sure of the steps to reach the goal...Google it.
When setting these goals, ensure that you are being ambitious and do not settle for mediocrity.
These points can work for any student regardless of the grade level that you are transitioning to.
