As a parent of two amazing academically and socially smart children, parents ask me all the time,
“How do you do it”
“What do you do to make your children so smart?"
. |
I know this is out of a desire to gain knowledge but sometimes, parents even go as far as openly comparing their children with mine. And yes, their children are listening.
That does 2 things :
It shatters your child’s self esteem and
It makes them resent children who portray what you bash them for not having.
I am here to tell you that every single child is smart.
Yes, I imagine some people turning their faces and saying…
"You can say that because your children get 90's their whole life” but that really is not the case and it is certainly not the reason.
The question is not How smart your child is, but How is your child smart?
As an educator people take their children to Natken Educational Services to assess why their child is not doing well in school. Yes, we have creative ways to help and we always do. Some persons compare the child's grades with other family members and expect that the child should attain the same grades. Yes, that can happen through the exploration of how the child learns and tailoring the content to match their learning style, but we must understand that every child is different.
So How is your child smart?
According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, the definition for smart is "having or showing quick witted intelligence".
When you think about it, there are so many ways to do that and there are so many persons who do that.
Howard Gardner's theory on multiple intelligencies highlights 9 main ways to be smart as seen in the photo above.
These include bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, existential, logical-mathematical, linguistic, intra-personal, musical, spatial and naturalist.
Now give yourself or your child a second look and ask yourself the question - "How Are You Smart?"
Place your responses in the comments below.

Interesting write up. Defining smartness in kids is not that easy. I am a pre-school teacher, and I am very sure that each child is smart and intelligent in their way. The above factors listed would help me to assess the smartness of my students.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you find it interesting. We should help the parents to understand this as well.
