The term "detox" according to dictionary.com refers to "a process or period of time in which one abstains from or rids the body of toxic or unhealthy substances."
Now relating to education, you may wonder: Is a brain detox necessary? Is it even possible? The answer is Yes and Yes!
Over the holidays school children are allowed to stay up late... like super late; over-eat and eat all sort of crap and literally drown themselves in electronic devices. However as the school term approaches, preparation and counteraction of these holiday effects become necessary if children are to perform at their optimum. Here's how to detox your brain after the holidays.
1. Cut back on sugar
As the saying goes "garbage in garbage out" meaning whatever you put in is what you will get out. Excess sugar impairs our cognitive skills which speaks directly to our ability to learn. Studies on brain activity provides evidence that shows that overeating alters our brain ability to function effectively. It is therefore in our best interest to eat brain foods to help with better begin function.
2. Get enough sleep
Sleep plays a critical role in learning and memory. During sleep your body rests and your brain gets a chance to process information from earlier in the day. Lack of sleep impairs your ability to learn and process new information. Getting enough sleep after the holidays is essential in your ability to function effectively in school.
3. Get some antioxidants
Antioxidants are essential in maintaining healthy organs and fighting free radicals in the body. These free radicals can damage any organ and can cause a wide range of chronic diseases and illnesses in the body. Therefore increasing your antioxidant intake is essential for optimum health.A study published in the Journal of American Geriatric Society, showed significant correlation between antioxidant intake and improvement in memory. It is suggested that daily intake of antioxidant through vitamins or foods be practiced.
The holidays are almost over but this can still be done. Start today to ensure academic success tomorrow!
