Top 5 Study Tips for 2018-2019

Top 5 Study Tips for 2018-2019

Doing well in school takes a lot of effort. Sometimes, even when you do your best it does not seem good enough to meet the standards of your institution. Some schools stream students based on their grades, some allow students to repeat a grade if they did not do well, while others allow students to go through the system regardless of their academic accomplishments. Whatever the case at your school, it is in your best interest to do well. You need to be intrinsically motivated while taking specific steps towards your goal of achieving academic success.  Ever too often we may hear that we need to study and study hard, but studying is a lot more than just reading what the teacher gave in class. Studying is the active creation of a mindset geared at academic performance that encompasses the entire lifestyle of the individual involved. Let me break it down for you in 5 tips as seen below.

πŸ‘‰Study Tip #1πŸ‘ˆ

- Sacrifice

I know that is not the first word you want to hear, but, it is placed first because of how important it is. As people we get easily stuck in our ways. It is difficult for us to give up things that we like or have come to love when it is time to change. No worries, you can start small. Telling you to create a study timetable sounds just like another homework that you would get from school and I'm sure you don't want to do that. Look at it this way though, you are simply being a big person and deciding what you do with your time and when you do it. In the time that you have outside of classes and chores, put aside some time for revising what was taught at school and reading what comes next in the topic. Revising helps you to retain what was taught before and reading ahead helps you to get a clearer understanding when it is being taught plus you can ask questions about specific things that you read.  What is exciting is, reading ahead does not have to be reading. Just search for the topic on YouTube or this blog and play a game or watch a video on the topic.

πŸ‘‰Study Tip #2πŸ‘ˆ

- Take notes

This goes without saying. You know those students in class that write everything that the teacher says...yes....take a page out of their book....not literally though. I mean, aim to make it a habit to write notes from the class. This helps you to get more personal with the information being given. First, you are hearing it, then you are writing it. That allows you to interact with the content in 2 different ways. Besides, if you don't take notes, how will you remember what was said in class?

πŸ‘‰Study Tip #3πŸ‘ˆ

U - Unplug your devices

This is another effortless thing you can do to help yourself to academic success. I know how it is. You go on Instagram and you get stuck. There is always something super interesting that you just have to see. Then there is Whatsapp, where you need to view everyone's status and you need to post your own. I get it. Butttttt, this is where the sacrifice comes in again. Checking your streaks on  Snapchat can wait. Yes, it will still be there when you are finished studying. You can view the status later and just click "Watch Later" when you get that notification from YouTube about the new post from your favorite YouTuber. Trust me, if you could put away your devices for a full hour or two, you would be surprised at the amount of progress that you could make.

πŸ‘‰Study Tip #4πŸ‘ˆ

D - Do not procrastinate

When we procrastinate that means we put things off. On a real, you have to keep up with your homework.  The earlier you do it, the better it is for you. Teachers do not give homework just because they hate you. The truth is, homework is designed to help you.
- Homework helps to reinforce what was done in class. That way, you would interact with the content in three ways. You would hear it, write it and then do it in the form of an assignment. This is repetition which is an important skill for achieving academic success.

- Homework can be used to ease the introduction of a new topic or prompt you to read over as you may be getting  a pop quiz.
You do not want a situation where the homework is piling up and then you end up forgetting to complete it. This can lead to punishment or even failing the assignment. It is best to write all your homework in one book with the subject, date given, due date and what is expected. That way, there are no surprises and you can decide what should be completed first.

πŸ‘‰Study Tip #5πŸ‘ˆ

Y - YOLO

Yasssss!!! You Only Live Once....but this time, its not how you think. It means you have to grasp the opportunities that you get on a daily basis. Time lost can never be regained. That 2 hours that you spent watching babies eat lemon on YouTube is lost forever. Yup, you can't get it back. While YOLO suggest that you should take risks and live life to the fullest because you only have one life to live, put that same acronym on your academics. You should get your work done and not waste any time because you never know when you will get a test.
